Thirteen Things about Steve Irwin

1. In Gina's words: "I think Steve was just the kind of person we all want to be."
2. He LOVED what he did, wouldn't we all love to be able to say that?
3. He didn't seem concerned about appearances; other, more important things were on his mind. The man was real, no doubt about it.
4. He had no problems showing his feelings!
5. HIs love of what he did and his excitement, his zest for living, was a pure joy to watch. He was happy; how many of us can say that?
6. When Barbara Walters asked his wife, Terri what she would miss most about Steve, she said: "He was fun, Steve was so much fun and I'll miss that." Steve was fun! Fun seemed to be a priority of his; I can identify with that. He was an amazing father and husband; you only have to listen to his daughter, his wife and his friends speak about him to know this. He brought great joy to those lucky enough to be in his life.
7. He was truly involved, in LOVE with animals, with rescuing them, with ensuring they had fun and were safe!
8. He loved his dog, Sui :-)
9. Things that were tough, he made seem easy. I mean, can you imagine tying up a croc?
10. In Megan's words: "I think the animals had a crush on him too. You could see how much he loved and respected them, and I believe that they knew he was on their side."
11. In a world full of complications, he was a seemingly uncomplicated, simple man.
12. There was something magical about watching him, about seeing him so filled with life and laughter and love.
13. He will be very much missed.

I watched the BW special on tonight and when she said that about her husband: #6 I just about started to cry. I can't imagine the loss of a spouse. so sad.

It really is a shame that such a freak accident took such a wonderful human being. I feel so bad for his family, especially his children. :(

Posted by Janene at September 28, 2006 12:18 AM

Yeah... he'll be deeply missed.

Posted by Diane at September 28, 2006 12:22 AM

It was a shock--too amazing to be believed really.

Posted by Cheysuli at September 28, 2006 1:09 AM

Yes, he will be very much missed...

Posted by mar at September 28, 2006 3:28 AM

The man had a zest for life that so many don't ever even experience a portion of what he had. It broke my heart when Terry said she lost her prince. He'll be missed.

Nice tribute! Mine is up!

Very nice list - happy TT!

I saw the last part of the BW special, what stays in my mind is what his wife said that she will miss the most...the "fun". How he taught her to "play in the rain", and that it was okay to spill ice cream on your pants. What a lovely person this man was, and how through all his passion and endeavors, he has touched so many others, and it really got to me when it was told that the "animals have lost their best friend".
You have given a wonderful tribute, he will be missed...
Mine is up also,

I watched the last half of the BW special. I loved the things his wife had to say about him, especially the part that you mentioned, "he was fun." He really was fun and had an infectious passion and energy about him. He was so not self conscious that you couldn't help but love him!

Posted by Lisa at September 28, 2006 6:13 AM

he was a complete nut, but he was a fun nut, and he was a nut for the animals, but that's why we liked him.

Posted by carmen at September 28, 2006 6:43 AM

Such a tragedy......he will be missed.

Nice list.

Awww...you're going to make me cry again.

I think #2 is so right, and so important. What a loss.

Posted by Colleen Gleason at September 28, 2006 7:23 AM

He is indeed missed. Great list. I always liked the guy and thought he made shows about the animals fun again. I feel devastated for his wife and children, that is the worst of the tragedy. She's awful young to lose the love of her life and her children are too young to be without their father. Its just too sad.

Yeah, he was great. Crikey, we will all miss him. You know, the day after he died, at work we all said, "Crikey," all day in his honor.

Posted by nat at September 28, 2006 8:53 AM

I sometimes get the feeling that people who don't live long lives know it on some level and live full tilt while they are here. He reminds me of the John Denver of the animal world.

Posted by colleen at September 28, 2006 9:25 AM

This is a great list of things that were so wonderful about him. I think he'll be in our memories for a long time.

Posted by goofy girl at September 28, 2006 9:37 AM

I watched. I didn't cry like I thought I would, but I came close a few times. I was so happy when Terry said she was blessed and that she'd do it all over again even knowing how it would end. I envy her that love, that passion. And every time she almost broke down, my heart broke a little for her.

Oddly, I dreamed about Steve all night last night.

He was a special human being.

Posted by Megan at September 28, 2006 9:41 AM

I'm so sad that he's gone :(

Posted by Jenny Ryan at September 28, 2006 9:47 AM

What I will miss the most is his energy and love for all of life.

Posted by Maribeth at September 28, 2006 9:48 AM

Beautiful tribute, Janet. Very, very true. I felt his wife's pain last night on her 20/20 interview.

Posted by meredith at September 28, 2006 9:54 AM

Such a horrible loss, he did so many good things and brought joy to so many. He will be missed...

Posted by Stacy at September 28, 2006 9:59 AM

Except for the negative note against stingrays and all of the idiots kiling them in the name of Steve Irwin I can't really think he would have wanted to go any other way. Maybe not so early in his life -- but this is nothing more noble than dying doing what you love.

Great tribute!

Posted by LOUP at September 28, 2006 10:07 AM

That is a wonderful tribute to him. I watched his show and enjoyed it for years, and I think in this list you've captured what made him so wonderful, and such a joy to watch. It's very sad.

*sigh* Poor Steve. I never even watched the Crocodile Hunter and I feel sad for him and his family.

Posted by rampantbicycle at September 28, 2006 11:20 AM

i watched part of it and had to stop... i was getting teary eyed and had to go to sleep.

there needs to be more people with his passion and enthusiasm towards helping animals and the environment. he was one of a kind.

Posted by monique at September 28, 2006 11:21 AM

Yes, he will indeed be missed.

Posted by Bev at September 28, 2006 11:25 AM

Perhaps we all have learned something very special from Steve, to be passionate about something and to give it our very best.We can't all love Crocs as he did, but we can give to the world of ourselves doing what we love and have fun in the process.
What a great person he was and we all have been blessed to know him.

Posted by Mel at September 28, 2006 12:30 PM

*sigh* it was just...like why him? and why now? i'm not a big fan of him but seeing his kids...he has lovely kids...and his wife...w/o him? if i were in his wife's place, i'd be devastated...anyway...my TT is up, drop by if u can =)

Never again will I watch another wildlife "celebrity" on TV and not miss Steve Irwin. He had a personality all his own, and without him, there's a huge void out there right now. I watched that interview with tears. :(

Posted by Laura at September 28, 2006 3:56 PM

A wonderful list...Nicely done. I have such trouble listening to the Wiggly Safari CD with my kids and hearing his voice, still filled with life and with love. He is missed indeed.

He was such a well-loved person--he will be greatly missed!

Great TT!

I would agree - he definitely made fun a priority and it showed how much he loved the life he created. He will be missed.

Email me and I'll 'splain about Angel Cards! :)

Have a good weekend!

I really liked Steve, he was fun to watch, energetic and fun-loving if not a little odd which was what was great about him.

Posted by shash at September 28, 2006 11:33 PM

What a lovely tribute! The world needs more like him!

What finally started the waterworks for me was Teri saying, "I have lost my prince.". I get watery thinking about it now.
