Looks to me like one of those Asian - style clasps. Usually they're holding shut a lacquer box or something. This looks awfully shiny - is there mother of pearl involved?

It's the closure on one of those cricket boxes. You know, the gold boxes with holes that people used to put crickets in so they could listen to their chirps!
