Thirteen Things I Love about New England
(Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island & Connecticut)

1. Autumn! Ohhh, I love the fall. Every last thing about it, well, except that it leads to winter. The foliage, the crisp smell in the air, apples, pumpkins, sweaters, wild wind swirling the leaves about, Halloween!

2. Spring! After a long New England winter, that first day that you don't need to wear a coat is just heaven! And I love all the little flowers peeping thru the ground, and the leaves budding, every last thing about it, well, except for the return of the bugs!

3. Summer! Flip-flops & tshirts, shorts or capris, that's my summer uniform. There is nothing in the world like a day that's hot enough for flip-flops, but cool enough not to need the AC and New England has plenty of those days!

4. The first big snowfall! I get so excited the first day it snows, but by the end of the winter I am OH SO GLAD to see it all gone!

5. The fresh clean smell. I went to FL in late June one year, and when I got back to Manchester, NH and off the plane that was the first thing I noticed. Fresh. Clean. Sweet. Love it!

6. You can drive thru these 6 states in the time it takes you to drive thru just one of many other states.

7. The accents...they just crack me up! Altho I do prefer a southern accent on a man ;-)

8. The ocean: It's not too hot, it's refreshing and it does get warm enough to actually swim in for about 3 weeks in August ;-)

9. The history and culture here.

10. The bugs are normal size, i.e., mostly small and the snakes are mostly not poisonous.

11. The beautiful old houses.

12. Driving out on the back roads, and never knowing when you'll stumble across an old farmhouse, an abandoned apple orchard or what!

13. So many of my friends and all of my family live here :-)

You know, now you need a Jack Sparrow 13 header. :)

One of these days, I'm going to get up to new england for the fall. Although we get some pretty trees here as well.

I love New England too. I tried to live and love FL but in the end, I missed New England.

Posted by Maribeth at August 24, 2006 7:20 AM

I like the snow!! I also love the scenery in the fall. Spring comes a little late for my tastes since I'm used to it coming earlier.

I live in Western NY, so we have similar "stuff". :) Fall is my favorite season - I just love it. New England is gorgeous..we went to Maine for our honeymoon, with a short stay in Boston as well.

I would LOVE to visit New England in the fall - I bet it is gorgeous.

It's so refreshing to hear someone say something positive about where they live. Good for you! Makes me want to visit.

Happy TT!

When one of my best friends first moved to NYC and my wife and I were visiting it was right in the heart of fall and we drove through upstate NY and into Conn. The trees were gorgeous. I would love to have an east coast home just for the autumn!

Ah, yes! #6 is so right. And I love it about that area. Yet, the neat thing about New England is that the states just don't 'mingle' in scenery...each state is very distinctive and different too. That I love.

Great list.

I'd like to nominate a #14: the seafood. ;) I've lived in very landlocked places all my life, so really good, really fresh seafood was hard to come by. I remember one of the things we loved about New England when we went as a family was how awesome it was to just be able to have lobster or something any old time.

Though all the things you list above that I experienced while I was there are also awesome. The history...the pretty old buildings... :)

Spoken from a 100% New Englander! What would I know, I'm only 97%. I lost 2% of it down here in Virginia. Your list makes me homesick!

Mine are late breaking.

What accent? The houses are my fav too. But NOLA has some stunning homes!

Posted by Krista at August 24, 2006 9:35 AM

the north end, the beaches, newburyport, tuscany!!!!

Posted by megan at August 24, 2006 9:57 AM

I'm so jealous. I would love to live in the North East. Cheers.

That's it. I'm moving to New England instead! I would so love to see the area in the fall. One of these days, you bet I will!

Posted by Laura at August 24, 2006 11:38 AM

You forgot to mention the lobster! And fried clams! I cannot wait to go back to Maine.

Posted by -R- at August 24, 2006 12:08 PM

Aahh, I can just imagine every thing. I've always wanted to visit New England... I don't know where I'd start. Probably Maine. And I readlly don't know why.

Great list! I love fall... and can feel it coming soon!

Happy T13! My list's up!

OK, OK, you almost made me wanna come and live there ;-)

Everything without the snow thing, I hate the cold snow, we have it here too, though I suspect your summers may be longer than ours, so you're having it better anyway.

Posted by Mrs Lifecruiser at August 24, 2006 5:20 PM

I'm all for mostly not poisonous snakes! We only have the non-poisonous variety here in the Great Buckeye State. Thanks for stopping by my T13. Sorry you had to go all the way back to 1952 to find a pro-Democrat quote. :-)

We have a lot of these things in Iowa too. But no ocean. In fact I just got an email asking me whether I wanted to join the sailing club at the college I attend I thought "where the heck do people sail at." I'm sure learning to sail in an olympic sized swimming pool takes away from the real beauty and excitment of actual sailing.

Loved reading your list! I so want to visit New England, but we haven't made it to that part of the country yet in our travels. I especially want to visit in the fall :)

Have a great day!

Posted by Stacy at August 24, 2006 7:51 PM

I've always heard how breathtakingly beautiful New England is in the autumn. I can only hope that I get to see it in person some day :)

Posted by Julie at August 24, 2006 7:54 PM

I would love to visit New England! I'm from the South. Sounds nice!

Posted by Barb at August 24, 2006 8:44 PM

The r's that are lost in NE that cause people to pahk the cahs migrate south so southerners can warsh there cars and invest in erl wells...
Great TT

I've never been to the New England states, but I would love to. Some clean air would be nice, but when it isn't cold. ;)
