Thirteen Things about
growing up in the early 70s!
First, the good (1-8) followed by the bad (9-13)

1. The MUSIC! Zeppelin, Bowie, T.Rex, Creedence, just to name a few that pop into my head.

2. The fact that you could have unprotected sex and not worry about getting a fatal disease. The only things you had to worry about were pregnancy, crabs or a couple of easily curable STDs, nothing that stayed with you forever like herpes or genital warts or HIV.

3. Radio; it was wild and free and uncensored and no one sued anyone cause they heard the word "fuck" on the radio. Man, I miss Charles Laquidara! Shite!

4. Smoke shops, all over the place. Not for the rolling papers, silly, for the cool roach clips! Not that I used them for their intended purpose. Nope!

5. The Frolics, a club up in Salisbury Beach that is no more and sadly missed! Spent many interesting nights there, listening to the James Montgomery Band, Duke & the Drivers and Joyride Express.

6. Miller lite, in the little cans. They stayed cool longer, I can't guzzle beer, and hate when it gets warm!

7. Being able to experiment, if you wanted to ;-)

8. Hitchhiking: It's how I got around from 14 til I got my license. Met alot of really cool people, only 1 freak, well BAD freak. I saw a hitchhiker on the highway up to Hampton Beach last night, and thought it was ironic, as I was going to see John Fogerty and my absolute favorite song by him is Sweet Hitchhiker. :-)

9. the Vietnam war

10. everyone smoked cigarettes

11. eight tracks

12. the clothes and

13. the hair (as evidenced below)!

Wow, a Snape blog. Cool. What do you mean 8 tracks were a negative? lol My T13 - Classic Books I've Never Read Edition is up at Bloggin' Outloud. Thanks! Oh, and I was first! lol

Posted by Lyn at August 9, 2006 10:39 PM

I turned 10 in 1979 so while I love the music I didn;t get to have "fun" until things were more dangerous in the 80s LOL

Posted by mama kelly at August 9, 2006 10:52 PM

I was old enough to know better in the 70's - had my 2nd child in Dec of 1970. :)

#10 - not everybody did this - Neither of us have smoked.

I agree with Lyn - nothing wrong with 8 Tracks. They were to us what the CD's are to the younger generations. :)

Oh, and if you live long enough, you see all the 'fads' coming and going - clothes, hair, shoes, etc.

My TT is up.

We had Grease and Dolly Parton's Here You Come Again on 8Track!

Great list! Thanks for visiting!

Posted by meredith at August 9, 2006 11:13 PM

Well, I wasn't born in the 70s so much of this is lost on me, but smoking is icky and the vietnam war was stupid :-) how's that for maturity?

Posted by amy at August 9, 2006 11:23 PM

The neat thing is that the music, hair and clothes of the 70s are all coming back! Great list!

Posted by kelli at August 9, 2006 11:35 PM

The music is very great. Interesting to live in such a free time.

My dad used to pick up hitchhikers when I was a kid. One time a guy took his wallet and my dad had a crazy adventure chasing him and getting hte police to get him. He even testified in court about the guy!

Posted by goofy girl at August 9, 2006 11:52 PM

The hair... Hmmm... my hair is long and straight like those. ROFL!

Posted by tnchick at August 10, 2006 12:10 AM

Heh, I don't know what to say. Before my time?

Posted by kristarella at August 10, 2006 12:38 AM

I was born in the mid 70s so unfortunately I didn't get to experience it, but I'm so sure I would have *loved* it...and would have been a full blown hippy!

Posted by e at August 10, 2006 1:49 AM

Those lists are a very good reminder for the year 1970.

Posted by Friday's Child at August 10, 2006 3:49 AM

Nice T13, I really got the hang of what YOU thought about it!

I was a teenager during the 70's too, but my list would have been a bit different. The countries differ to.

Cool to see yours :-)

(Especially the photo, love it!)

Hey... I still kinda have that hair, lol! :)

My Thursday Thirteen is up!

Happy Thursday!

The clothes and the hair crack me up. My parents bought me this Electric Compay shirt, and I thought I was the s#$%. Alas, I look a the pics now and cringe.

Posted by carmen at August 10, 2006 6:53 AM

yes...I remember....I think.....

....I still have some of my 8 tracks!!!

Posted by Laura at August 10, 2006 7:02 AM

I most assuredly do not miss the clothes or the hair from the 70's...yikes! Of course looking back now the 80's clothes and hair were even worse.

I'm glad your tastes are more refined now than Miller lite!

Posted by Carl V. at August 10, 2006 7:37 AM

The music was so good! And, it just seems like things were easier....But, the clothes!!!

Posted by Nancy at August 10, 2006 7:56 AM

hahahaha! hahahahaha! That picure is awesome. I was born in 75 so all I remember about the 70s is the blizzard!

Posted by Krista at August 10, 2006 8:23 AM

Ach. All these youngsters. I loved Peter Frampton. And Led Zep.

I had a pair of purple, crushed velvet, bellbottom, hip-huggers. I wore them until the velvet was gone from my *ss.
LOL

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Pam

The hair is HOT! How did we (as a group of people go from stick straight hair in the 70's to the biggest hair ever in the 80's?

Posted by Michelle at August 10, 2006 9:02 AM

Jeez I wasn't born until 73 so I think I missed out on all the fun stuff--music; roach clips!--but got the clothes. man, my mom still has a closet full of doozy.

Thanks for stopping by my TT.

Posted by Goddess In The City at August 10, 2006 9:16 AM

I grew up in the 80's, so I only have a vague recollection of some of these things, but the music, that takes me back!

Posted by Megan at August 10, 2006 9:31 AM

Oh my....I remember that we used to hang roach clips (with all the fun feathers hanging from them) from our hair and our belt loops -- was so cool to do in those days LOL

Posted by Sue at August 10, 2006 9:33 AM

No mention of disco? ;-)

Posted by -R- at August 10, 2006 9:35 AM

I was a teenager in the 70's. Why did we wear those awful "earth" colors everywhere we went? Green and brown and orange, yech!

What was so bad about the 8 tracks? I had a bunch, course, they don't hold a candle to the CD's and DVD's today. My daughter found one of ours and couldnt' figure out what it WAS LOL.

One good thing about the 70's. We weren't politically CORRECT! I hate that BS!

Posted by Laura at August 10, 2006 9:38 AM

wow, Janet - You are OLD. just teasing. my 70's memories are more TV oriented - charlies angels, fantasy island...

Posted by Karen at August 10, 2006 10:06 AM

I have often wondered what it would be like to hitchhike. Part of me feels it would be sort of romantic, but the other part keeps reminding me that if I relied on hitchhiking to get around I'd never get anywhere - I'm too shy of strangers. :)

(I guess that was why I had a bike as a kid. :))

Posted by rampantbicycle at August 10, 2006 10:35 AM

I grew up in the seventies too.. sort of. I was 4 in 1970 so spent my early years thru them. The 80's stick in my mind more so.

Mandy :=)

Posted by Mandy at August 10, 2006 10:37 AM

Sounds like you had fun! My favorite decade has always been the 70's. Even when it was not 'cool' yet. I saw movies and listened to music since I was like 7. My mom was a little freaked out.

Posted by Yo Tambien Te Mando Besos at August 10, 2006 10:56 AM

I love the way 70s photos have those muted colours!

Posted by Vernicious Knids at August 10, 2006 11:19 AM

I loved this idea for a list. Funny, the other day, I thought about doing an 80's list which I was working on for NEXT week So true about hitchhiking and I sense there was less feeling of dread and that counts for our entire world and society.

Love your blog and great to "meet" you,
Cheers and here is my TT

Oh but the 70's were a bad, bad time for anyone with super curly hair like mine because the only "stylish" option was an afro. And well... that's not really "stylish". :-)

Posted by Miss Britt at August 10, 2006 12:00 PM

I remember the head shops. But, we used to go to Radio Shack for the clips.

Amy sent me.

Posted by Anthony Preziosi at August 10, 2006 1:08 PM

What an awesome list. i still remember the zep posters I had all over my walls....Thanks for bringing back some incredible memories!

Posted by rusvw at August 10, 2006 1:14 PM

Great list :)

Posted by Dawn at August 10, 2006 1:24 PM

Loved the '70's!

Posted by Maribeth at August 10, 2006 1:24 PM

70's....hmmm. I rememebr the music!!!!

Posted by Kelly at August 10, 2006 1:52 PM

Everytime I see a photo of the era I do a double take, thinking it could be my own family! I would also add the Boston Tea Party where I first saw Zepplin before they were big and so many other excellent groups!

Posted by colleen at August 10, 2006 2:10 PM

8 tracks! forgot all about those!! :)

My 13 is up! :)

Posted by Tracy at August 10, 2006 2:24 PM

Janet, you are too cool! Of all the thirteeners today - the word "roach clip"! I was wondering if you ever saw Led Zeppelin live? I can't remember if I read that in a post or not - something about the spandex - but just wondering and how lucky you are if you did!!

Is that you in the picture??

Posted by Ocean Lady at August 10, 2006 5:08 PM

LOL. The 70's...not the most visually aesthetic decade, but fun nonetheless! Can't beat the music, that's for sure :)

Posted by Julie at August 10, 2006 6:03 PM

LOL i was born in the late late 70's so I dont remember any of this...though I have seen movies, and the pants were terrible! :D
