No tv and I kinda like it!

The Sunday before last, I came home from a day away to discover my Tivo wasn't working. My brother took a look at it and diagnosed a failed hard drive. So sad...bye bye to all my saved recordings, to all the Eurekas which I was saving up to watch at one time, to who knows all what!

Last Friday, I contacted Tivo and told them about my hard drive problem. The first person I talked to said: "Oh so sorry, you bought it, it's yours, there's nothing we can do". I asked him to connect me to the proper person so I could cancel my service.

That person said: "Oh, your hard drive died? I see your unit is only 2.5 years old, that's MUCH too soon for a hard drive to have died, we'll ship you a new Tivo free of charge.

ROFLMAO! Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum! So I have to ship my Tivo back, and since they don't have any of that particular type of Tivo in the warehouse, they're sending me an upgraded model :-)

FREE!

While I heart my Tivo, I must admit I've enjoyed being tv-less lately. I've noticed I eat less (seems I enjoy eating in front of the tv), read more, walk Wolf more, have more/longer conversations, just DO more.

So I'm in no hurry to return my old Tivo, nor in a hurry for the new one to arrive. Once that connection was severed, it seemed to also sever a dependence I didn't realize I'd had.

In the meantime, I hope my brother comes over soon and hooks up that wireless modem I bought yesterday, so I can enjoy my laptop, which I got a few weeks ago, and haven't used much (it IS convenient for watching movies on when I housesit and can't figure out how to work someone's tv, or when I'm staying in a motel with no cable)!

How about you? What are your addictions?

Frickin' Facebook -- which I may just dump. I have no idea what I was thinking.

Living without TV is much easier than you thought it would be, isn't it? I rarely watch anymore, and I could care less.

J and I were, at one point, TV-less by choice for about 4 years. I mean, we had a TV in the house, but we weren't connected to cable or satellite and couldn't pick up anything on antenna there, so we only used it to watch videos now and then. It was fine with me, and yet I'd say that TV is one of my addictions too. Go figure.

Some of my others are internet(!!!!) and sweets. And books, I suppose, but to me that's like saying I'm addicted to breathing. :-)

I watch too much TV and wish secretly for it to break. I would save money on cable and read more.

TV I can take or leave. I really don't watch much of it at all. Now, wireless internet is another story! I love it a wee bit too much. I have been cutting back lately though and it's been a good thing. :-)

Surprisingly, I dont watch all that much TV......there are a few shows that I schedule time to see....If I had Tivo, I probably would want to watch more!

Heh. I'm addicted to TV and while vacations away from it are nice, I don't think I could do it for forever.

I had a similar experience with my laptop. Twice. So I have a nice Powerbook from Mac that they've replaced for free. The second time they weren't supposed to but it took so long for them to diagnose the problem and fix what they would fix for free, they decided to just replace it instead haha.

Definitely blogging. I find that I rarely watch tv anymore, because I spend all my damn time in front of the computer. Bad enough I use it for work all day, then I can't drag myself away after hours either. And I work from home, so basically my entire life is spent in one chair!

I've employed that "cancel my service" thing a few times in the past month, and I am convinced that in every company, this is the only department with the authority to get anything done. (Amex gave me free sky miles and no annual fee to stay, and Earthlink knocked my price down.)
I have a TV addiction, which I'm hoping to remedy by unplugging the Tivo for one month. Notice I'm doing it before the good fall shows start. So far, I'm reading more and have developed a rather long blog reading addiction.

Well, I'm addict to sleeping. When not awake, I love to sleep.
I'm afraid I'll be addict to web 2.0, when there will be more content and offerings.

And I'm addict to travel.

I always have mixed feelings about the start of new tv shows in the fall. Its not that I don't enjoy shows like House, and the upcoming season of Heroes. I just hate being tied into weekly viewing and much prefer to watch DVD's. This summer has been all about watching stuff like Northern Exposure, Deep Space Nine, All Creatures Great and Small, Farscape...I'm not looking forward to having to give that control up. And I have been too cheap to buy Tivo or DVR at this point. LOL!

My Addictions are the computer & Dvr (Same as Tivo- just via your satellite tv company instead of independently)
The first person you spoke to at Tivo does what I do all day at work (though I work for a satellite tv provider-Dish network-shhhh) & they were not doing their job. They're supposed to offer you options - I'm glad the disconnect department did right by you. Though 2 & 1/2 years is not an unusual shelf life for a piece of equipment with a hard drive. It's the sort of equipment that you just can't predict how long it may or may not last!

Nothing jumpstarts customer service like the words: "I'm going to cancel!" Works every time.

Years ago, we were TV less for several months because we never got around to signing up for cable at our new house. We got SO much done, and I didn't miss the TV at all. Hub finally called them and signed up for it, but I could have done without it! Without it, we played more board games and I read more books, and we walked more and ... oh, I'm tempted to pull the plug already. lol.

My current addiction? the Internet! My email! Blogging! Everything inside this laptop is my addiction. I'd go nuts without it. :) I should pull the plug on this one too.

nah.
