Thirteen Recipes from Cookbooks I Love and Use Often
As promised, here are the recipes (click on the thumbnails to be able to read the recipes)!

pumpkin soup
1. Pumpkin Soup, from The Joy of Cooking...one word...YUM!

potato salad
2. The BEST potato salad ever, from Julia's Kitchen Wisdom; Jack said so, therefore, it must be true!

spinach
3. Spinach with Sesame Dressing, from Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art. A refreshing way to prepare spinach!

mushrooms
4. Sweet Simmered Dried Shitake Mushrooms, from The Japanese Kitchen. Oh, man...so good!

chicken
5. Marinated Chicken Tatsuta-Style, from At The Japanese Table. All the things in this recipe are readily available in most major grocery stores. Amazingly delicious!!!

sweet potato casserole
6. Sweet Potato Casserole, from The Cotton Country Collection. I've made this every year since I got the book...my brother always asks...are you making that sweet potato thing this year?

7. Baked Whole Pumpkin from The Frugal Gourmet. If you like pumpkin pie without the crust, this is for you! Plus it makes a great presentation...you can use smaller pumpkins and serve each person individually.

chocolate drink
8. Sue Riding High, from Wild Women In The Kitchen. If you like chocolate, you'll like this!

poaching
9. Poached chicken, from Nantucket Open House Cookbook. Try it...it's the most delicious way to cook chicken for salad EVER!

jambalaya
10. Jambalaya, from Celebrate San Antonio: A Cookbook. Let me tell you a little story about this recipe. I made it once for a guy I was dating...and he told my roommate that the "things" in there looked like vag!nas ("things" being oysters). No wonder "men like it" ROFLMAO!

salmon
11. Tweed Kettle, from Scottish Cookery. Thought it'd be haggis, didnae ye! An interested way to prepare salmon.

frosting1
12. White Mountain Frosting (every time I've typed "frosting" tonight it came out either"frontong" or "frostong"...wtf?), from Betty Crocker's New Picture Cookbook. My first ex-MIL made the BEST freakin' cakes and she always made this frosting!

fritters1fritters2
13. Tilly's Banana Fritters from "100 Years of Family Recipes & Memories 1890-1990", which was compiled by my Auntie Rosa. Tilly was my Dad's mom and my favorite Grandmother (shhhhhh). If you can read while Auntie Rosa wrote, you'll see why!

You're making me hungry! I have several of those cookbooks too...The Frugal Gourmet, Julia's Kitchen Wisdom, and of course the Joy of Cooking...my bible.

The Japanese Spinach salad sounds fab!

Oh boy this is a tough one for me. I'm on day three of a diet, but lets see, I think there are a ouple I can eat on here. The thing is, I am not hungry right now, but it's late at night and I'm catching up on my recorded programs...and I would love to be snacking while I am watching my shows! Yikes...

I love that you took photos of the individual cookbooks to post here, they look really cool!

Cheers

Oh my God! I loved Aunt Tilly's Banana Fritters! I would go over to her place and she would make them for me and we would sip tea and eat the fritters and if I was lucky she would play some honkey tonk music and sing!
I just loved your Grandma, Jan. She was the best!

Posted by Maribeth at November 16, 2006 7:20 AM

Some of those would be great for Thanksgiving dinner. Thanks! We'd been stressing over what to make.

Yum some fun things to try!! What's your favorite from this list!

Posted by goofy girl at November 16, 2006 7:33 AM

How did I leave off sweet potato casserole of my list? I love that stuff!

Dressing balls are the dressing, but instead of stuffed in the turkey or in a flat pan, it's rolled into balls and cooked.;)

Posted by carmen at November 16, 2006 7:35 AM

Oh wow, a recipe for banana fritters - just in time for Thanksgiving! Thanks, Janet!

Posted by Erin at November 16, 2006 8:09 AM

Great idea, Janet. Showing not only the cookbook, but the recipe's too. I get into cooking ruts and when I come across something like this, it's inspiration.

Posted by Laura VS at November 16, 2006 8:33 AM

Sweet! This is a great idea; thanks for sharing.

Posted by Megan at November 16, 2006 9:43 AM

I *love* sweet potato recipes! Great list too.

Posted by Lisa at November 16, 2006 10:14 AM

We call it Sweet Potato Puff and it's the same recipe except we roast or rather bake the sweet potatoes. YUMMMM. It's more like desert than a veggie side dish huh!!
It ain't T-day unless you have Green Bean Casserole and Sweet Potato Puff. Otherwise it's just turkey and taters.

MMMmmmm I have the Joy of Cooking. Whole Foods for the Whole Family published by La Leche League is the cookbook I've used the most. It's beat up and stained with all kinds of food DNA! I have an Italian soup cookbook that I like, but I only ever make the same 3 soups.

Now I'm hungry for breakfast!

Come see if you can fit on my 13 Thursday couch!

Posted by colleen at November 16, 2006 10:33 AM

Thats a great idea for a list. I like it.

Happy TT!

Posted by Miranda at November 16, 2006 10:36 AM

I wonder if my parents would like the sweet potato casserole recipe? They are such purists, I think mom only sprinkles them with brown sugar and calls it good. Maybe I'll try it this Thanksgiving!

Great list, thanks for sharing your favorite recipes!

Posted by Gina at November 16, 2006 11:00 AM

Yummy! I wrote my own recipe for a pumpkin raisin custard because no one in my family really cares too much for the crust!

Have a great week! My TT is up.

Posted by Melissa at November 16, 2006 11:13 AM

ohhhh I think I'm going to make that Sweet Potato Casserole for Thanksgiving!

Posted by Krista at November 16, 2006 11:18 AM

I need to bookmark this entry because so many of those sound delicious! Would really like to try them out!

Great TT!!!

Posted by Annie at November 16, 2006 11:21 AM

Oh, I can't read these now, I'll make myself too hungry! :) But I'll come back and do it later.

You must see this, by the way.

Posted by rampantbicycle at November 16, 2006 11:48 AM

OMG, this reminds me times when I loved to cook and I still have a whole bunch of cooking books. But now I am lazy and I paint !

Posted by Gattina at November 16, 2006 11:58 AM

Very clever!
That frosting sounds soooo good. I'm not much of a baker but I bet it tastes just as good on a boxed cake mix as it does on a scratch cake ;~)

Posted by deb at November 16, 2006 12:09 PM

What a clever idea! I can't wait to try some of these!

Posted by Kukka-Maria at November 16, 2006 2:24 PM

Oh, that's just great! Now I'm hungry again.

Cool list!

Posted by Missy at November 16, 2006 2:47 PM

I love lists about food! These sound wonderful, and I'll have to come back and give them a try. :)

Posted by Caryle at November 16, 2006 3:23 PM

Oh wow, what a great idea, and thanks for the recipes! I'll definitely be back later tonight to get some of those, and bookmark your flickr page. :)

Posted by Momma Bee at November 16, 2006 3:28 PM

Thanks for the great ideas.
Happy TT!

Posted by Brony at November 16, 2006 5:18 PM

we make that sweet potato recipe too! i like it but my friends all LOVE it. one guy even calls me to make it for him every year in exchange for a 6 pack of bass ale...i am easily bought apparently.

Posted by ren at November 16, 2006 5:49 PM

Great list! Including the photos of each recipe was a nice touch. I feel tempted to make Tweed Kettle just because it has such a cool name. I could see asking my friends "Wanna come over and eat some tweed kettle?" and enjoying their bewildered looks :)

Posted by Christina at November 16, 2006 6:28 PM

What a cool list! *bookmarking*
I love that you scanned in the pages.

Happy TT!

This is one yummy, yummy list you have! I remember the book The Joy of Cooking from Grey's Anatomy! I think I should try to get a copy of that book and adapt and try out the recipes there to our taste.

Happy weekend!

Posted by MommyBa at November 17, 2006 8:35 PM

Great list! I'm thankful for people like you that can actually cook (I'm awful at it).

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
