NaBloPoMo #28: Christmas Tree Lights
wolf and tree
I read somewhere on the internets that one should use three 100-light sets per tree foot. I have a 6.5-foot Christmas tree, this means I need 18.5 100-light sets. HUH??? I think that's waaaaaaaay too many lights. Eighteen? First of all, I'd be blinded, second of all, you couldn't see the tree, third of all, the electricity!

Right now I have 3 boxes of blue and white faceted 70-light sets on the tree...maybe I'll add two more in solid blue and be done with it. What color do you prefer? All white? Multicolor? How about purple? Hmmm...

I know many people prefer white lights because they are somehow more refined. And indeed they do have a pleasing fairy sparkliness. White lights have their places.

But not on my Christmas tree. ;) I want mine to be multicolored, all the way. To heck with refinement! Let us throw formality to the winds! You know. :)

Oh, and they will be LEDs. Because those are more energy efficient than regular lights, and also it makes you feel all Vaguely Scientific/Geeky to have LEDs on your tree.

(Also, yes, that is way too many lights. I think the number of sets you describe should be fine.)

Yeah, that's waaaay too many.
BTW, Love the picture with Wolf!

Sheesh, that is way too many lights. Sounds like Martha Stewart. Can you say "overkill"?

I like any kind of coloured lights for the holidays. I use multcoloured myself...I like the tree to look as homey as possible like I remember my grandparents tree. I don't like holiday trees to look like they were decorated by a robot.

I hope you post a photo when you're done decorating your tree!

I like lots of lights on the tree - maybe not quite that many, though! I love having two trees, one that's got white (or blue, that's what we had growing up) lights and has a "theme" and is perfectly decorated, and the 2nd one in the family room with crazy ornaments and multi colored lights.

I think we're only having one this year, and it will be of the crazy sort!

However many lights you use I am amazed that your tree is up with lights on it! We are putting ours up the weekend of the 9th I think. I can't wait!

I can't remember how many lights I used per foot, back when I didn't have a pre-lit tree. I used to have a 9 foot tall tree and I think I used 10 strands of 100 bulbs. The new tree I bought is only 7 1/2 feet and it came pre-lit with 850 lights. I'm an all-white light fan, but some people think that is borning. I think it looks great with my decorations and highlights them, rather than detracts from them.

I really wanted the LED lights, but I couldn't find a pre-lit tree that had them. I have to get a pre-lit tree or I'll spend half the day putting the lights on and waste that time I could have been putting up ornaments instead. Sanity Saver! LOL ;-)

Love the doggy pose in front of the tree and can't wait to see it when it's all done!

I like colored for a more fun look, but white is classier I guess. I like the idea of white and blue tho, sounds cool! Purple would be pretty too.

BTW the individual entry page is a little wonky.

ok, my electric meter is running like the one in Christmas Vacation!

I prefer Mulit colored on the tree....I have a 7 ft tree with 9 sets of lights on it! Some are 100's and some are 150's!!! lol

and the rest of the house? Forget it...I lost count

I think our pre-lit tree is 6.5 feet & has 400 or 600 lights. I like blue & white lights together, it makes it look icey to me. I like purple, too. My lights are multi-colored, because it was that or plain white on the pre-lit trees.

ummm.... I like a little color but mostly white. Jimbo is in charge of lights.

That does sound like a lot of lights, most of my lights had sections out so I had to go get new ones & I bought 2 boxes of 100 lights to go on a tree which will probably be around 6 feet tall (I refuse to deal with the tree until aproximately 2 weeks before Christmas)
Growing up we had all white & I like color so I always have multi color lights now.

We have 10 trees inside and lights on 5 outside. The inside trees are all different themes light combinations from pre-lit to fiber-optic.

"We wish you a Merry Christmas......." LOL

I like multi and lots of them. I don't actually put them on, I only detangle...

We have lavender lights and medieval style ornaments, most of them are in antique gold color, some beaded, some feathered. We are going on our tree hunt this week and putting our tree up Friday - yea!

Definitely sounds like waaay too many lights for me. I'm one who likes white lights on my tree, but I'm not opposed to multicolored on others. ;)

Oh, and btw, I never made it over to your flickr account...when was that? A couple of weeks ago? But I'm off to do that now...

I like multicolored lights, mostly because that's what I grew up with so that's just what seems most like home to me. The white ones are really pretty though. I like a lot of lights, but not as many as that article said. Sheesh!

That is such a beautiful photo.

P.S. Purple lights are SOOOOO gay Dude...

Im a huge fan of colour, especially for Christmas trees, but not to many lights tho :)

I like white and one other color... Purple would be a good choice. Blue is nice too.

I like colored lights other places, but not as much on the tree.

Posted by Lisa at November 28, 2006 8:22 PM

i'm an all-white lights girl. But my parents like the multi color lights, and I enjoy those when i'm at home.

I'm in love with Wolf.

I think I need you to come take some pics of Snickers. ;-)
