In my late 30s, when I was getting ready to leave Japan, I decided I wanted a tattoo to commemorate my time there. So I chose the palm tree (for visiting Okinawa); the setting sun (Japan is the land of the rising sun, so as my time there grew shorter, the sun was "setting") and the word "dreaming" in Japanese writing, called kanji (because I knew I was going to be dreaming of Japan for the rest of my life).
The tattoo is on my back, on the left, high up (it looks like the right in the picture cause I took it in the mirror LOL)

This is the absolute best story for this week's theme! I am thinking of getting a tattoo...something personal, just for me. Inspiring photo...hmmm...I am going to ponder what tattoo will have a significant meaning to me. Cool pic this week!!

Must be awesome memories...
Having a tatoo is my son's dream! I have never really wanted one! I do find the process very fascinating! Yours has a story and that is what makes them so interesting! Great share!
Great tattoo, great pic and great post. Two of those books on your "up next" list I've read :watership down and My life by clinton. Both are great. Although W.D. uses weird made up language like Clockwork Orange.
I love the story behind this tattoo. What a perfect way to always carry around the memories of your time in Japan.
That is absolutely fascinating~the definitions for your tatoo. I have my first Photo Hunt picture posted.
Have a great weekend.

I love it! And you know my recent experience with ink! Getting a tattoo is a personal thing and should mean something special to you. This one obviously does.
Mine's up :)
I bet you never even thought how handy that would come in some day :) heh. Fun idea for the theme. My photo is up
Lovely tattoo. Japan must have been amazing. Your picture is just perfect for the theme.
I agree with the others, this is a great photo hunt image! I thought of getting a tattoo in college but I change my mind so often I was afraid to pick something, lol.
In reply to your question what is my tattoo?
It is a large Celtic Knot. In the centre rim is the Hebrew symbols for the tree of life-the 4 elements, water, fire, earth, and air.
The centre body is a large silver goblet with the Architype Tarot cards falling out of it.
The knot rises upwards in a Celtic pattern to form the tree of life. Trunk along my spine.
Very nice photo and story to go with it. Thanks for sharing!
This is funky as well as cool...I love tats...beautiful and a great way to remember a fond memory.
Nice.
Mine is up.
Cheers,
Carol
I sat for it in one session. 11hrs.
I had it done for a magazine article I was writing. It was about coming of age a 35. I don't think it is available on the internet any more. It was one of the pieces I wrote as Amy Rosenburg.
The tattoo artist suggested that I sit for one time. Aparently if you get them done with time apart it becomes painful. The area begins to heal and the new blood vessels and nerves are too close to the surface and they become activated really easily. The experience was not painful. It felt like someone was trying to saw me with a plastic take-out restaurant knife. Just weird scratching. This is because the vibration causes the nerves to numb over the day. The boney area of the spine was more difficult than the lower back.
that's a great story and beautiful ink...seems like the perfect way to carry the experience with you forever :)
I think, if I ever get brave enough to get a tatoo, I'm going to get it where I can SEE it. ;) ha ha.
Happy monday
Very original! Love the tattoo!
thats neat...i love that you put so much thought into it!! that makes it far mor e special than the LIZard i have on my back, lol.
