Saw this turkey vulture in Billerica; he was enjoying some road kill when I first noticed him. Minutes before, on a side road, I'd driven past mama & daddy turkey out for a stroll with their 9 children, and thought it was a turkey with a dead chick...but no.
In all my years living here, I've NEVER seen a vulture. Anyone else seen one in the wild?

Well, yes, but they are quite common down here.
What kind of zoom do you have on your camera to get a shot that close?
AAARGH! Nothing like that in this part of the world.

Yep, we see them fairly often. That red head of theirs always throws me for a minute because at first glance they *do* look a tiny bit like a wild turkey. You got a great photo!
I recently saw 4 near my home. The first time ever! I live in Southern NH. Your photo confirmed what I suspected... nice photo.
Yes, TVs are surpringly common in the greater Boston area, but I've mostly seen them *flying*, so many folks don't notice them. Seeing them on the ground or on a low perch is more startling & impressive.
Lovely photo, btw. You can clearly see how weak vulture *feet* are, which is why they don't capture live prey the way hawks & owls do.
Actually hit a turkey vulture on the way to Mexico lst September. I had no idea they were this far north.
I dont know....but he's looking at you with a "dreamy" look in his eye....like....."mmmmmmmm dinner has arrived"!
Creepy looking bugger!
It's like ET, it's so ugly it's cute. :)
Coool shot!!! Great Zoom!
Yeah, I see them all the time. Most peole see them and think they are hawks circling. Usually its the Vultures, whether Turkey or Black. We have them both.
They have TONS of them down in DC when we go, just look up while you are driving sometime, they are ALWAYS there.
Good job!
I don't know about "turkey" vultures, but we definitey have general rotten-meat-eating-type birds. I'm not sure what type we have because I've never seen them very close, only swerving while trying not to hit one or seeing them soaring way up in the sky. Nice shot, but I'm agreeing with Laura about the way he's looking at you. He's wondering if you'd taste good with some BBQ sauce.
