I saw that quote yesterday over on Carl's blog; and I brought it up last night with my hairdresser. She said, it's all well and good, but you can't be in a relationship by yourself. True...but I still like the quote :-)

Love that quote but I (maybe in error) take this quote to be something she said in relation to the work she did with the poor, etc. Plus I believe that it takes a certain gift to be one of the people who works to try to redeem and revive others. I think we should all strive to have that attitude towards ourselves and others but not beat ourselves up trying to make irredeemable relationships work.

And your hairdresser is wrong. One of my favorite Oscar Wilde quotes is "To love oneself is the beginning of a likelong romance". From An Ideal Husband. ;)

that should be 'lifelong' romance...doh! you can fix it for me if you like.
