Snagged from Smoochdog who snagged it from The Noodle Incident (and modified it a bit).
I love reading, and so does Michelle, aka Smoochie. We'll meet at Barnes and Noble, grab a book or magazine and chat and flip pages.
1) Total number of books I own?: Man...alot! I have so many in storage that I said I'd stop buying any more and just get them from the library. This, of course, doesn't count for the Harry Potter books, or anything else that really catches my eye.
2) The last book I bought?: My Life In France, by Julia Child. In fact, I was with Smooch when I bought this! I was looking for a photography book, but was distracted by Julia's name...I really loved watching her cooking shows, and if you did, too? Check out this book. Well worth it!
3) The last book I read?: Same as above, sadly, just finished it last night (I hate finishing books!)
4) What I am currently reading?: Nothing at the moment, altho I have some books just waiting for me to pick them up, such as My Life by Bill Clinton; Mark Twain's Library of Humor or Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress by Susan Jane Gilman, just to name a few. Also, I haven't finished The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion yet. I pick it up, read a bit, put it down and go back to it in a few days or a week. It's about loss, and I'm not sure I want to immerse myself in that topic yet.
5) Five books that have meant a lot to me or that I loved the most:
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle : A Novel by Hiroyuki Murakami
My Year of Meats by Ruth L. Ozeki
The Good Earth by Pearl Buck
Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein
If you want to play along, please do so. I'd love to know what you all are reading and what books mean alot to you! Post your answers on your blog or in the comments--just let me know, I can always use a few good book recommendations!

I wantt o read The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion before I "need it" so to speak I think you are right that it must be hard to read right after a loss.
Also I am pages away from finishing Alternatives to Sex: A Novel and next up (if you will loan it is the The Glass Castle. One thing about bussing it to work is I get to read SO much more and I love it!
I'm not surprised by any of your list! Great choices all. Thanks for visiting today by way of Michele!
I'm reading Tad WIlliams The Dragonbone Chair right now. I love books and everything about them, from their smell to the feel to the fantasy. Visiting from Michele.
Interesting list. I can't make any recommendations because we seem to have very different tastes, although I will read just about anything you put in front of me!
I am presently reading a copy of "The Country House" catalog! .....does that count?
Ohhh that Good Earth was an amazing book!! Did you know Pearl Bucks child had a rare (well I think rare) genetic disorder called PKU where they can't process an amino acid correctly and it bulids up to toxic levels? Because of Pearl Buck, PKU is tested for in all newborns (if caught early the person will grow up normal, if not they will be mentally retarded as well as other deficits). Also, if you've ever noticed on a product with artificial sweetener (Diet Coke) Phenylketonurics (which is PKU) : Contains Phenylalanine it's for people with PKU so they know it has the amino acid they can't process and they should only have very small quantities of it.
Personally, I was not that fond of (har har) the hobbit but I really loved LOTR. I should have put them down on the list. I had to read the Hobbit for summer reading back in the day and thats how I found LOTR cause my mom bought me the hobbit and LOTR.
Anywyas you have some others on your list I'm going to check out!!
my stuff is out on my blog... i think i'm going to have to check out the Julia book, i remember watching her growing up!
(well, when i was growing up, not her...)

oh goody, book memes...by far my favorite!!!
1) Total number of books I own?:
Holy crap! Unknown, but a few hundred at least. Not as many as I'd like to own, however.
2) The last book I bought?
I joined the Science Fiction Book Club specifically so I could get the 50th anniversary of Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination, and ended up with 4 other books as well. The last book I bought in a bookstore was the recently released Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchet hardcover Good Omens.
3) The last book I read?
The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale.
Also read several collections of the comic Fables to get caught up and all the trade paperback editions of Hellboy.
4) What I am currently reading?
What am I not reading? Anne of the Island by LM Montgomery and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen are the two I'm alternating back and forth between right now.
5) Five books that have meant a lot to me or that I loved the most?
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Time and Again by Jack Finney
Dracula by Brom Stoker
Time Enough for Love by Robert Heinlein
Adventures of the Stainless Steel Rat by Harry Harrison
The Julia Child book sounds wonderful, btw.
You can't be 87380 serious?!?
