My Sacred Life
Day 24
This is the 85th Saturday Photo Hunt; the theme is "Hot";
Hot is what I wish it was...22 degrees outside, brrrrr!!! I'm going to bake a cake, just for the heat from the oven. I'd roast a chicken, except for all that leftover turkey and ham. But the pies ARE gone...so cake it is!

My Sacred Life
Day 17
This is the 84th Saturday Photo Hunt; the theme is "I love...";
I love brussels sprouts and pinecones, old recipes and salty chocolate, smiling dogs and traveling, a good cup of coffee, cool shoes, and of course, photography!
And I love my cousin who is celebrating a birthday today out on a cruise ship! Go wish her a happy birthday, if you so desire :-) Happy Birthday, Maribeth!!! Love you!

This is my friend, Michelle; she used to do a lot of yoga...I don't think she's so much into it now. We had a great day this day, hanging around Boston! And she'll probably kill me when she sees this post LOL!

I'm following my cousin's example and posting pictures of my grandmother, who was her grandmother's sister.

Grandma in her younger days

This is Grandma as I remember her most. I miss her a lot...she was always so loving and kind...and fun!

Here are three definitions of the word practical:
4. adapted or designed for actual use; useful
5. engaged or experienced in actual practice or work
6. inclined toward or fitted for actual work or useful activities
I can't think of a picture that suits these definitions more than this one:
Also, this one is very practical...for this month!

I missed last Saturday (was off having fun on a beach in St. John), but I'm back this week!

This Saturday's theme is paper...what pops into my mind when I think of paper are three things in quick succession: newpaper, writing paper, wrapping paper. But there are so many more things made with paper!

My address book and the card below it, both made of paper

Here are some cute little post it notes I bought in Japan when I lived there (yes, I still have them LOL)!

Any or all of these things could be considered "dirty"...if you have a dirty mind! Careful, contains nudity...but only of statues!

1. A series of objects placed next to each other, usually in a straight line (not quite in a straight line, but it'll do).

3. A line of adjacent seats, as in a theater, auditorium, or classroom.

I could NOT make up my mind on this one, so you'll have to vote on which of these you like the best!

Took this at work, from the 5th floor.

Shot this one in Nevada recently; I call it Spiky Bunny Shadow!

***UPDATED***
I meant to use the picture below today, but totally forgot about it til I looked at the fridge! It was drawn and given to me by the daughter of a friend of mine the day we went to a flower show in Boston. I like her interpretation of me!

(Frodo is standing at the edge of the pit of molten lava, and he turns his head to look wearily at Sam.)Frodo: I'm here, Sam.
Sam: Destroy it!
(Frodo holds the Ring out before him, above the fiery pit, but does not throw it in.)
Sam: Go on. Now! Throw it in the fire.
(Frodo is still reluctant, and struggles internally, trying to do what he knows he must.)
Sam: What are you waiting for? Just let it go!
(Frodo stares deeply at the Ring, listening to its call. He pulls the Ring back to his chest, and turns back to Sam.)
Frodo: The Ring is mine!
(He pulls the Ring off of its chain.)
Sam: No...no…
(Frodo puts the Ring on his finger, a smile of pure evil on his face. He disappears.)
Sam: Nooooooo!
Sorry for posting so early, but I'm away for the weekend!

I took this picture inside the Orpheum Theater in Boston during a Ray Davies concert back in March of last year. Back in its heyday it was a grand old place, as you can tell by the beautiful ceiling. Now it's decaying...the velvet seats are worn and dingy...but wow, that ceiling! Oh, and to tie it into the "Technology" theme, I took this shot with my camera phone! Technology is a wonderful thing :-)

Shiba Inu fur is VERY plush, very thick and ... they blow their coats twice a year, which means they go from a very thick, heavy coat to almost bare...like a doberman or other similar thin coated breed.
Isn't he adorable?

This is a ginkgo biloba leaf; a tree that was quite common in Japan, but I've recently noticed a couple of them in local cemeteries. It's assets include:
* long-lived shade tree, often maturing at a very large size
* very urban tolerant
* bold texture, with a growth habit of great character
* leaves flutter in the slightest breeze
* fall color on selected cultivars is a clear solid yellow!
Also, I think it's cool that this species may not flower (and therefore also may not fruit) until it is about twenty years old!

In my late 30s, when I was getting ready to leave Japan, I decided I wanted a tattoo to commemorate my time there. So I chose the palm tree (for visiting Okinawa); the setting sun (Japan is the land of the rising sun, so as my time there grew shorter, the sun was "setting") and the word "dreaming" in Japanese writing, called kanji (because I knew I was going to be dreaming of Japan for the rest of my life).
The tattoo is on my back, on the left, high up (it looks like the right in the picture cause I took it in the mirror LOL)

Ghostly view of the Cheasepeake Bay Bridge
According to someone who sounds like he knows what he's talking about, this is the William Preston Lane, Jr., Memorial Bridge, more popularly known as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It is near Annapolis and connects the Baltimore/Washington, DC metro area to Maryland's eastern shore via routes US 50 / US 301. I took the shot from a plane, flying from Manchester, NH to Baltimore, MD, so he's probably right!

Last year for my birthday Megan gave me the funniest present. It was a wallet, which isn't funny in and of itself (it does have a really cute turtle on it). The funny thing was it was filled with pictures of things I love as you can see above. Don't tell anyone, but I still have that Robert Plant picture in it!

And this picture just cracks me up! What a shiba sees (or smells!), a shiba owns!

And the sign said long haired freaky people need not apply
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said you look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do
So I took off my hat I said imagine that, huh, me working for you
woah!
[Chorus:]
Sign sign everywhere a sign
Blocking out the scenery breaking my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign
And the sign said anybody caught trespassing would be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and yelled at the house, Hey! what gives you the right
To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in
If God was here, he'd tell you to your face, man you're some kinda sinner
[Repeat Chorus:]
Now, hey you Mister! can't you read, you got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat
You can't even watch, no you can't eat, you ain't suppose to be here
Sign said you got to have a membership card to get inside Uh!
And the sign said everybody welcome, come in, kneel down and pray
But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all,
I didn't have a penny to pay, so I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign
I said thank you Lord for thinking about me, I'm alive and doing fine
[Repeat Chorus:]
[Repeat Chorus:]

Photography's a sport, right? Anyway, it's one of my Dad's passions and it is for Father's Day...so
Happy Father's Day, Dad!!!
I asked Dad what he wanted to do for Father's Day; he replied: "It doesn't matter to me what we do, as long as we're [my brother, me, Dad] all together. So you know what we're doing? We're having a bbq at my brother's house. He's cooking up some lobsters and grilling some steak; I'm making potato salad and a flourless chocolate cake for dessert. And we're spending it together.
Happy Father's Day to all the Dads of all types out there :-)

This was my town's library when I was growing up and I spent many happy hours there; it was oh so nice and cool in the summer! Yes, the picture is a little crooked, and yes, I cut off the top of the spire, and yes there are traffic lights and the front of a car in the picture...but I had a leash wrapped around my wrist with a shiba inu attached to the other end and he was a bit antsy stopping on a busy street corner.
"Built in 1880 with a gift from Mrs. Eleanor Bennett, it was offered as a library to the town. When the town declined the offer because it did not want to incur the expense or liability of running it, the Bennett Public Library Association was formed to oversee its operation. Dues were collected in small amounts to cover operating expenses and the library thrived. Its rooms and the basement were filled with books, and it played an important part in the town's growth. The Bennett served as the town's only library until 1980 when a new building, paid for by the town, was built nearby. Its rooms are now shared by the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center and the Atlantis Playmakers."
