| RIP II, The Twilight Series |
| For Carl's RIP II challenge, from Peril the Second, I give you: The Twilight Series (3 BIG books) by Stephanie Meyer. Once I started reading the first book; Twilight, I realized I had to get the other two immediately; New Moon and Eclipse). Because these books just reach out and GRAB you, I wanted to fly through them, but I took my time, finishing in about a week. Yes, I know these books are BIG! The day I finished, the author was at a book signing at our local Barnes and Noble; I didn't stop by cause I felt ... like a fan girl, a stalker, and I'm MUCH too old for that ;-) Anyway, I really, REALLY enjoyed all three books. Bella and Edward are the central characters; Bella is a human and Edward a vampire, who is, of course, HOT!!! Jacob becomes a central character rather quickly; Jacob is Bella's friend from childhood, who becomes a werewolf. What a fun read! This is what a young adult story should be like. Bella and Edward are VERY attracted to each other, in all senses of the word; I love when Edward says how GOOD she smells (he means her blood). Edward, because he's more than 100 years old, altho he became a vampire at 17, want to marry Bella...and wants to wait until they're married before they get together. Sweet! So old fashioned, so refreshing, such a change from 11 year olds wearing mini skirts and tight tops. I'd like to thank Carl for recommending this series in his first post about RIP II! It's always a pleasure to find a new author you enjoy! |

| What Is It Wednesday #78 |
| Here's last Wednesday's picture: And this is what it was cropped from: Almost everyone, from Lisa: "O-R-E-O! I'll have a glass of milk too please. :)" to Nicola: "I think it's the top of a chocolate sandwich type cooke too!" got it correct! Some of you thought waffle or pizzelle maker, some of you thought manhole cover (oh my god...MANhole...hahahahah!!!) and DebR...well, here's what she thought: "It's an attempt at a crop circle, only it was created in a muddy field with no actual crops growing there (so they had to build up the mud into ridges instead of cutting down hay) and it was created by a very girly bunch of aliens, which is why it's so flowery. (Sheesh, it's SO obvious!)" Now THAT'S imagination! As always, thanks for playing! By the way, all photos used in What Is It Wednesday are marked as "private" in my flickr account...that's so no one can view the picture at a bigger size to get a better look! |

| ***SCROLL DOWN FOR WHAT IS IT WEDNESDAY!!!***
I've been noticing a decrease in comments, too and then I read about this over on zoot's blog today (right after I berated a friend for rarely commenting on my blog [not you, K]). Deep down, though, I thought ... oh mah god, it was either a) me or b) my blog was screwed up. My blog designer has been overworked and whatnot lately so I didn't want to ask her to take a look to see if something was wrong and was resigned to my fate. What a maroon! So all you lurkers; come out, come out, wherever you are, stop hiding behind your bloglines and google readers and SAY something, will ya! Comments make everyone smile :-) And if you need something besides my horrid writing to generate a comment ... pick a picture! Which one do you like better...and why? or I'm posting this early, because you know, tomorrow is What Is It Wednesday! |

| Manic Monday |
| If you'd like to play, Lisa hosts Manic Monday! Here we go: Which month of the year do you think best describes your personality? Hmmm...I'm going with October. Sometimes hot, sometimes cold but never boring...that's me! If you could have had the starring role in an existing movie, which movie would you pick? Um...I'd have Keira Knightly's role in the Pirates movies, please! Getting to kiss Johnny AND Orlando...sigh... Are you attracted to people whose personalities are very similar to your personaltiy or very different? Very, VERY different...I guess it's that old adage, opposites attract. Not just in love, but in friendship as well. |

| What Is It Wednesday # |
| Here's last Wednesday's picture: And this is what it was cropped from: This belonged to my grandmother, I think (Mel? MB?) and it's from Fujian, China. Michelle (aka birthday girl--Happy Birthday!!!): "It is a small wooden tree next to a small wooden japanese style piece of architecture a house or a resting place." was the first to get it right! Wil was close: "A highly stylized Japanese garden woodcut within an oval frame...." quickly followed by Mel: "It's a Japanese wood carving scene." and then DebR: "Oh, I bet this is one of those little Japanese scenes carved from Balsa wood and put into a little glass box. " As always, thanks for playing! | RIP II, Second Book; Strangers |
| Second Book of Four, from Peril the First: Strangers by Taichi Yamada This book was intriguing to me, in more ways than one. Yes, it's a supernatural ghost story, which I love...AND it was set in Japan, one of my favorite places. Can one fall in love with a country? Sure! But that's not the subject at hand, is it. I think what we can learn from this book is to go ahead and make an effort to care more, to help not just strangers, but friends and neighbors (and not just help, but LISTEN to). If only he had done so, none of what followed would've happened. An especially nice touch was that he couldn't see what was happening to himself. We never really do, you know? Great book, give it a read! |

| The Photo Thursday at Create a Connection hostess this month, Amber says: "...a good theme for this week's photo day to post a picture of something new to you. A new food you had never tried before, a new pair of shoes you love, a new friend you just met, anything that is new to you." Here's what's new to me; they just arrived a few days ago, and I'm SO in love with them! Here's a shot of them meeting Captain Jack Sparrow, who seems to have lost an arm: Here, they meet Screaming Mimi! And here, they're settling in nicely together: If you'd like some poppets of your own check out their creator's blog for details! |

| Prompt #4: Seven Things I Associate with October |
| Cafe Writing: Scribbles on a Digital Napkin I'm picking "Option Four: Seven Things" off the Cafe menu; it looks quite delicious! In improvisation, one of our exercises is a game called "Seven Things," in which we go around in a circle giving each other the challenge, "Give me seven things that...". We are not going to go around in a circle here, but if you're drawn to lists, this prompt is for you. Give me seven things you associate with October. You don't have to explain them, but it's more fun for readers if you do. As I enjoy making lists, particularly about things I love, and given that seven is considered a magical number, this prompt is perfect for me :-) I've sprinkled my digital napkin with a bit of BPAL's "October" for inspiration and here we go! 2. Foliage: There is nothing more spectacular to me than reds, oranges and yellows of beautifully colored autumn trees. Talk about going out in a blaze of glory! 3. Crisp weather: Finally! Sweaters, comfy socks, jeans...and that smell, OH that smell in the air. Cool, clean, brisk...I love it! 4. Full Moon: In October, it's called the Hunters Moon and this year will be on the 26th. This moon is in Taurus, which makes it a good time to let go of pain we've experienced due to death, to honor those who have passed, and to become more aware of the spirituality of death itself. 5. Apples: The fruit of Autumn! When the weather starts turning cool, I think of pies and crisps and tarts, all filled with apples and cinnamon and a touch of maple. Yum! 6. Corn stalks: In almost every cornfield, you'll notice one stalk left behind. I don't know why...but it makes for a wicked good picture! 7. Stormy skies: Clouds scudding by, the tiniest of raindrops falling, possibly a bit of snow at the end of the month...but NOT on Halloween, please! If you'd like to see pictures that go along with the entries, go to the extended entry :-)
A friend of mine who is blogless did Option Five: Pick Three - I shall not sleep lest I DREAM for in DREAMING in sleep so SHALLOW shall the SPIRITS enter in and torture my soul. |

Course, I'd like to follow him up with Professor Snape, cause I'm a slut ;-) If you could be invisible for one hour, where would you go and what would you do? I pretty much an invisible now... If you could ask God any single question, what would it be? What is my purpose in life? |

| The weekend |
| Did you miss me this weekend? Friday, I went to my first ever book club meeting; great snacks and conversation (the things you learn when listening to a bunch of social workers!) and I got a TON of stuff from Megan to review for AGMS...not a hard assignment as most of it is either scented lotions or oils and candy. Poor me, eh? Saturday, I gave Wolf a nice long guilt-induced walk and then headed up to Vermont to visit my friend Maureen. She had a golf tournament to attend, so I let myself in the house and hung with Rumor (her dog), Emma (her brother's dog) and the cats, Chloe and Wheels. Great fun was had by all! Mo, her brother & SIL were starving when they got back so we went off for dinner, a delicious Italian place (I had leftover spaghetti for a late night dinner AND lunch the next day LOL). Mo took me to downtown Burlington later that night where we strolled and took pictures. We capped the night off with POTC 2. Ahhhh, life is good. Sunday, I awoke to the smell of coffee and maple sausage...heavenly! We had a quick breakfast and went to meet a friend of hers for a hike in the woods. We kind of got lost while hiking and it turned into a 4 hour trek, some of it up BIG hills (this IS Vermont, after all). Thanks to my GPS navigator, we found our way out. We dropped Rumor off at home and headed to the Magic Hat Brewery, where I got an awesome pint glass and a 12 pack of Halloween beer :-) Then we had a brunch of boxty (and Guinness for me) at an Irish bar called Ri Ra. Came home, packed and headed home...where I collapsed in bed soon after I arrived, after picking a tick off Wolf (never on Max...I think Wolf has sweet blood). I'm still tired! How was your eekend? |

| Thursday Thirteen: 13 Answers to 13 Questions! |
![]() 1. Heather had a few: "What do you do to entertain your inner child?" Er...anything and everything that I think will amuse it! 2. Next she asks: "What veggie are you most like?" What veggie am I like? Hmmm...broccoli, I think, especially with the perm; bushy headed with a strong stalk! 3. Followed by: "What new show are you into, if any? Pushing Daisies, I LOVE! Also Reaper and Journeyman. You all? What's your favorite new show? 4. My cousin asks: What's your favorite memory of Surf Drive Beach? Finally, FINALLY being allowed to swim out to the raft! And eating frozen milky way bars, of course :-) Just being out in the sun and in the ocean. Great question, cuz! 5. She also asks: "What's your favorite barbecue item? For you southerners, barbeque up here in yankee land doesn't mean meat smoked for days...it means hot dogs and hamburgers, grilled corn, eggplant, potato salad, cold beers or lemonade. I'd have to say my new favorite is grilled eggplant, but it has to be crispy! 6. Monique asks: "what first attracts you to a person?" I can't lie...the size of their...smile!!! I love a good smile. Attractiveness is part of it, but by no means all. More important is their sense of self-confidence, which is funny, as I seem to lack that in huge quantities. 7. She also asks: "what movie could you watch over and over again and never tire of?" She's totally being facetious here, cause I'm pretty sure she knows the answer: Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (the first in the trilogy) will capture my attention until the day I die! Any of the POTC movies'll do the trick, too! 8. Followed by: "cabin in the woods or oceanside mansion?" Cabin in the woods, strangely enough. Mansions are just too much work! 9. Julie wants to know "Who was your first dog?" That would be Cocoa, when I was a kid. She was a sweetie, and looked very much like Max. 10. Then she wants to know "What's your favourite photograph that you've taken so far?" I think it's this one: ![]() 11. Followed by "What was your worst date ever?" That would have to be the dude with the pen!s so small it might as well have been an innie. 12. Lisa asks: "Did you have fun tonight?" Yes!!! Lisa and I went to Blue Heron Tattoo in Derry; Lisa got her first ever tattoo, and I got my latest one outlined...and finally came up with a design to redo one on my leg. Woohoo! ![]() 13. Finally, another from Heather: "What things draw your eye when you've got a camera in your hand?" Same answer as #1; anything and everything! Discarded bits of paper, raindrops, the iris of someone's eye...it depends on my mood at the time! Lion's Mane Jelly: Imagine having no eyes or brain, but still having one of the most sophisticated weapons on earth! Lion's Mane Jellies have tentacles over 100 feet long, each one packed with tiny harpoons that inject prey with deadly toxins! I'm so scary! Rodrigues Bat wings: Your wings are very different from bird wings, which are made like human arm bones. Bat wings are more like really long fingers...creepy long fingers! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last night, Wolf was up in his window seat (the window was open; screen firmly in place) and I was reading in bed. We heard a noise outside, like something crashing through the underbrush in the back yard. We both looked at each other, then out the window. I turned off the light, the better to see into the back yard and but we saw nor heard anything else. What do you think it was? |

Don't forget ... the Friday Fill-Ins are over here now! 1. The last good thing that came in the mail was a Halloween card from Lisa (thanks, Lisa, and yes, the new tat is still a bit itchy!). 2. This week I'm grateful for the amazingly good review I got at work and the pretty damn good raise (especially compared to previous years). 3. Trio of Foie Gras (an appetizer at Todd English's Tuscany) is the most delicious thing ever.* 4. The Dalai Lama inspires me. 5. I'm most happy when I go hiking in the woods with the dogs. 6. And all the roads we have to walk along are never straight and narrow. 7. As for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to relaxing, tomorrow my plans include dinner and a movie and Sunday, I want to see Halloween Pace Event at Great Brook (horses & riders in costume)! *it features ash brushed goat cheese, prosciutto, fig and plum jam, frisse and tangerine honey. | Manic Monday |
| f you'd like to play, Lisa hosts Manic Monday! If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be and why? I have always wished my parents had pushed me more, education wise. I'm sure it's tough when both parents are working for one or the other to sit down and go over things, but... Plus I was a stubborn kid (not much has changed), so I don't know that it would've done any good. Do you think that the world will be a better or a worse place 100 years from now? Oh, it's so hard to say! Because so many people don't believe or just don't care or are lazy...I'm sure that from a global warming standpoint, the world will be worse. At the beginning of a relationship, do you trust your new partner unless there is something specific to make you do otherwise, or do you withhold your trust until he/she has earned it? I'd love to be able to say I trust...but it'd be a lie. I don't know that I'd ever really trust someone...maybe that explains why I'm single :-) Thanks, Lisa! |

| RIP II, 6th book: Rises The Night |
| This, the sixth and final book I read for Carl's RIP II challenge, was by far the sexiest: Rises The Night by Colleen Gleason. Ooooh la la! Victoria, the heroine, ends her period of mourning (for her deceased husband) in a spectacular scene featuring Sebastian, who is the most lust-worthy thing since Professor Snape, in my not so humble opinion. I'd even go so far as to say he's stiff (oops) competition for Captain Jack Sparrow, and that's saying a lot! Anyway, mind out of the gutter...I enjoyed this book even more than Colleen's first, The Rest Falls Away. It was more suspenseful, with bloodier vampire bites (and sexier, too...oops... slipped into the gutter again, sorry), lots of intrigue and a bit of sadness-- Victoria endures a tragic loss. The setting, nineteenth-century Rome, was fantastic, with many little details that really set the mood. Here's an excerpt from Colleen's website: The sea of chanting, bright-eyed faces was at her eye level for only a moment before she was dragged to her feet. Victoria had an instant to grope for her vis before she swung out at the vampires who came at her. She kicked and dodged and punched, had the satisfaction of meeting one of them in the face, and was reaching back to pull a stake from her hair when her arms were grabbed and pulled down to her sides. Dimly aware that it had taken two vampires, one at each arm, to do so, she ducked and tried to twist free. The grip was too strong; she couldn't break it. She couldn't get to her stakes, her holy water, her crucifix ... hands were on her everywhere, pulling at her dress, her arms, her legs, her breasts. She felt her head being jerked to one side by the hair, felt her coiffure loosen and her neck bare to the sweet-smelling room. The dull, pasty smell of blood on the breath of the vampire nearest her filled her nose, pushing away even the hypnotic scent of the incense. When his teeth sank into her neck it was almost a relief. Yeah, baby! Vampire bites...woohoo! |

| The Haunted Halloween Cruise (story #3) |
| Just a reminder...What Is It Wednesday has a new home; this week's entry is up early cause I'm off to see Van Halen tonight! And to keep you entertained while I'm out...here is the third of three stories my cousin, Mel, wrote for me. Chapter One ![]() The long anticipated trip was finally happening. Jan, Mel and MB were on a flight that would take them to their cruise ship. One week on a Haunted Halloween Cruise was going to be more than a blast. Costumes were packed in their bags as well as swimwear and flip flops. MB was sitting with her laptop computer in front of her, Jan had her camera and was peering out the window trying to get some cool cloud photos and Mel was waiting camera in hand to snap a few shots after Jan was done. A few moments later MB looked up from her computer, "What the heck is going on?!" she said with some alarm in her voice. She had heard some very strange sounds, a low deep growling noise and then they all heard a scream and loud banging noises. The cabin door in front of them flew open and a huge Frankenstein-like monster emerged. He had blood dripping out of his mouth, a huge knife was sticking out of his chest and his eyes were wild with rage. He had a flight attendant by one arm and she screamed over and over again, "Help me, please help me." No one moved from his or her seats. With mouths open in horror everyone watched the poor girl being attacked by the monster. Then Jan started to laugh. She couldn't help herself. It was so obvious that this was a set up to get everyone in the Halloween spirit. But the monster wasn’t amused and raising his head up glaring straight at Jan. With a terrifying murderous look on his face he let go of the flight attendant, turned and lumbered down the aisle toward Jan and her cousins. Chapter Two ![]() As the Frankenstein monster drew closer Jan realized that this no joke, it was not a costume worn by some flight attendant and that the monster looked absolutely filled with rage. As he raised his large arms in front of him they saw how grotesque his hands were. They were covered with wounds that were oozing green pus. Midway toward them he paused and licked at the pus before moving forward again. Just as he got close enough that they could smell his foul breath, an Air Marshall came from behind the monster and quickly wrapped a rope around his ankles causing him to lose his balance. With that the monster fell to floor and gave a horrible grunt as the knife that was in his chest pushed all the way in and killed him. After what felt like an eternity several men came forward to help and with great difficulty they carried the monster off to be locked away till they landed. "Man, that was a close call!" Jan said as she took a deep breath. "Jan, you almost got us all killed!" Mel complained. In that instant the lights went out and moments later the cabin of the plane was filled with hundreds of screeching vampire bats. Utter chaos broke out! Women were screaming and men were trying to hit at the bats to keep them away. When the lights finally came back on the bats were gone. Mel looked around to check on the others only to discover that Jan was sitting in her seat looking dazed with blood running down her neck. Mel yelled, "MB, look at Jan!" and they both hurried toward her noticing that the source of the blood came from what appeared to be a large bite. Chapter Three ![]() At last they were aboard the Haunted Halloween Cruise ship. It had been a strange flight and Jan insisted that she had not been bitten but had simply scratched her neck as she reached to ward off the flying bats. Even stranger was the fact that when they mentioned it to the flight attendant on the way out of the plane she looked at them as if they were crazy, said she had no idea what they talking about and added, "I can see that you three are going to enjoy your Halloween cruise!" Jan just muttered under her breath something about that weird attendant while MB and Mel looked at each other and shrugged. They put the flight behind them, looking forward to the cruise. Their rooms were next door to each other and they agreed to unpack and freshen up and be ready to take a walk around the ship in an hour. The cousins went into their rooms and closed the doors. Jan loved her room. It wasn't big but it felt cozy, was clean and had a few little Halloween decorations around. A little pumpkin sat on the dresser and a skeleton hung in the corner of the room. Jan decided to shower right away and opened the door to the bathroom. It was dark in there and as she reached for the light she felt her blood grow cold and shivers run up and down her spine. She felt something, a stringy gossamer web, and thinking for an instant that it was just another Halloween decoration she reached in a little further and as she did an enormous hairy black spider appeared. It was then that she realized that she was stuck to the web and as she struggled to free herself she became even more tangled giving the spider time to move his long crawly legs in her direction. Its mouth was open and its blood red eyes were gleaming with delight at the thought of the meal set before him. Chapter Four ![]() The screaming was so loud that both MB and Mel heard it, knew it was Jan and ran to her room. Jan had left the door slightly ajar; pushing it open they saw Jan crouched on the floor. "What is it? Are you alright?" they both asked at once. Jan opened her eyes and looked around her, there was no web and no spider. "I thought I saw a spider, a giant one in the bathroom. I was caught in its' web and the spider was about to attack me!" MB turned on the light in the bathroom and looked around. She saw a little tiny spider in the corner, grabbed a tissue and squished it. MB laughed and said, "We know you hate spiders, but come on, this little thing couldn't hurt a fly, well maybe a fly but not you. I saved you, dear cousin, now get up and shower so we can go exploring." A short time later they met in the hallway and headed off to check out the ship. The crew and many others were dressed in costumes already because tonight would be the Midnight Halloween Ball. As they walked about they saw all kinds of ugly masks as well as cute angels, ghosts and Harry Potter outfits. They had stopped for a little light snack and were heading back to their cabins when Jan noticed a sign that said, "Haunted Happenings This Way!" with a big arrow pointing to a small door. On the door was another sign that read, "Enter If You Dare!" "Let's go!" Jan said excitedly and MB opened the door. There were candles lighting the way down an unadorned hallway. A sharp turn to the left and then stairs headed down into darkness. Mel peered down the stairs, turned and to the others and screamed, "Boo!" Jan and MB jumped...laughing, Mel said, "Ha, ha! I got you. This isn't so scary." "Let's just keep on going, come on!" Jan grabbed a candlestick and led the way down the dark stairs. Chapter Five ![]() As they reached the bottom of the stairs the door above them slammed shut and locked with a loud click. The blast of air from the closing door blew out the flame. All three were breathing hard and for a moment that was the only sound they heard. They turned into a damp dark room. A loud creaking noise filled the air sounding like the opening of a heavy wooden box. "I don't like this, let's get out of here!" MB whispered. Only ONE will hear my call. In full moonlight a golden box she'll see, Inside on red velvet she will find a key, Once in hand she need only wait, Not to disappoint, I won't be late. Blood that's meant for a lovers bite I'll share with her this very night. With that the firelight was extinguished and everything went dark. Chapter Six ![]() An overhead light switched on, the coffin was gone, the fireplace was gone and the room was filled with stacks and stacks of boxes. An older man with a toolbox in hand came toward them from the other side of the room yelling at them, "What the heck are you ladies doing down here? Didn't you see the sign on the door, CREW ONLY?" Chapter Seven ![]() A few hours later they were at the ball. Mel was dressed as an old hag, MB was dressed as a Dackel Princess and Jan had on a black gown with a long flowing cape and fake fangs in her mouth. It was all so grand. Lights flickered, carved pumpkins with candles inside glowed on every table. Costumes of every imaginable kind paraded around the room. Music blared and festive treats lined the buffet table. ![]() |

| RIP II Challenge: The End! and Happy Halloween! |
| From ghoulies and ghosties, Long-leggety beasties, And things that go bump in the night, Good Lord, deliver us. - Anonymous On to Carl's RIP II challenge: This is the comment I left upon hearing of the Challenge: I'm totally in! I'll be reading The Other by Thomas Tryon, I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, Four and Twenty Blackbirds by Cherie Priest and Strangers by Taichi Yamada for starters. This year, I'm back to my reading self! I even have a book from my childhood that I'll be rereading...can't wait! I'll be posting a picture of the books as soon as I get in...in a nice stack! Well, I did it! Although I didn't read all the books I said I would...I ended up making some substitutions. Out of the original list, I read Strangers by Taichi Yamada, which I really enjoyed; to that I added The Twilight Series (3 big books) by Stephanie Meyer, and in doing so, found a new author to adore! I also read Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause and 2 short stories: "Sredni Vashtar", from the book, "More Tales to Tremble By" and "Bored Tom", from - Strange Happenings: Five Tales of Transformation by Avi. Peril the 1st completed! Thanks, Carl, for this challenge. It was fun, and allowed me to meet interesting some folks! |
